Over-Nighter at Davis Pond (pic heavy as usual)

The last couple of days were really nice…last night was great, I went for an over-nighter up by Davis Pond. I got to walk around for a while when I first got up there, the woods were alive with the sounds of spring. There were lots of Turkey running around, and several Rabbits.

lots of Squirrels as well. The first one is looking through the windshield.

There were lots of spring flowers

Found a nice stream to sit by for a few minutes.

Then a walk through the trees

There are always lots of ferns and moss here this time of year.

I found someone’s home in the trees.

I found a snake enjoying his dinner…I think…though I couldn’t figure out what it was exactly; I didn’t want to disturb it any more than I already had.

And then the sun started setting.

Time for my dinner…mmmmm smoked oysters and crackers. There was a storm that moved through. I have video/audio of that but I’ll have to put it on you tube…too big for photobucket.

The next day I walked around the area there at the pond a little more.

The Cherries are coming along, three trees bearing.

Then I rode up the road a way and went for a walk in a different area. Parked here and checked out a stump that I was sure was fatwood.

Even though it looks rotten

IMG_2813.jpg

there are signs that give it away…the wear of rings at the base of the branches.

and sure enough cutting into it…

Fatwood.

IMG_2823.jpg

and yes it does burn in the rain, and yes that is thunder you hear.

This can be a bad thing to mess with here, anyone know why?

Then…shortly after I found a nice secluded spot the rains started up hard again. Shortly after this I decided I had been soaked enough times and that I was ready for a cup of coffee. So I headed home for dinner.

Thanks Drew glad yo enjoyed them. Yeah I like my little truck too, I never lose it in the woods here lol. I need to get a camper shell for it, and maybe a slight lift kit for a little more clearance.

Couple of guesses... Some sort of ants nest, or have you got some of that Poison Ivy or Poison Oak we hear about?

Well...I gues fire ants could be another reason but mainlt I wouldn't disturb this for fear of a Timber Rattler, they are one of our most venomous snakes and they like to bury up inside rottening timber. I'll see if I can find a picture of one.

I got around to uploading the videos that were too long for Photobucket to you tube today.

This is a short walk through the woods in the rain.

Thanks Andy and Nag, glad you enjoyed the pics, I enjoyed getting to take them. Sorry there was no real bushcraft involved but I was more looking for melting into the natural environment. Next time I'll try to make it more bushcrafty. Maybe someday I'll get out to the uninhabited areas of Nickajack lake and take some good pics over the water. Would love to get get back down on the Chattahoochee River and take some pics of the circular slew I used to camp in. Looking at google maps that area still looks undeveloped.
