Hi there folks.
Noticed http://www.thebushcraftstore.co.uk/the-bushcraft-store-hobo-stove---complete-set-with-zebra-billy-tin-690-p.aspon their site and like the idea of it.
Much of my camping etc will be done in very small woodland areas and on beaches so fuel in terms of wood should be no problem (albeit somewhat damp).

Just wondering on how folk get on with the fuel blocks and the trangia system?
Is the trangia a meths burner hence the extra price?

Only ever cooked with a a gas burner before so unsre whether to go for that or the hobo stove.
No doubt I'll end up with both though anyway.

Cheers

Hi mabster, to be honest you can make it all yourself for a hell of a lot less and have the satisfaction of knowing it's all your own work. I did a tutorial on a deo meths stove and some other stoves and copied the ikea hobo stove that waylander did and use mine all the time with a home made billy made from a stainless steel coffe jar from 99p store:lmao:ps yes you can use hex blocks etc instead of wood:D

What he said ...

Have a go yourself it's good fun, it should really be an initiation for all new members on here :)

I suppose you're limited with the range of shops you have up there but I'm sure you can put something together. If you're stuck getting parts let me know as I've probably got spares you can have.

Cheers for the quick replies.

Making one certainly would be the best option, would mean the money could go towards a Jetboil (gf likes a her tea quick!).
I have a fine maintenance room at work with a few punches etc so yes..
It's a one deal.

I'll trawl the forum for some stove ideas.

£40 for something that you can get in Asda for £4!
Well, that said, I suppose you get a Zebra billy and a few other bits and pieces as well. Mind you, you can make your own stainless steel billy from an Asda coffe/tea/sugar container at the same fractional cost.
Best of luck to the Bushcraftstore, I suppose - they saw a market and have tried to fill it. But I'd sooner spend £38 on a Honey Stove (which packs flat) than £40 on a £4 Asda kitchen drainer...

For those coming to the Outdoors show meet - I have loads of tea/coffee/sugar canisters, some of which are already converted to billies plus one drainer for sale or swap.
I will bring them all along...with loads of other goodies as well.
For those needing instructions on how to make a Hobo and Billie can set up - it is all in my book! - see my thread in the Makers Market section.

I would advice thinking about your set up and wehat you want to do with it start with the billy and the size you need for how and what you cook then find the bits that compliment and fit it well

heres mine in the hobo gallery

doing baking

for me a 10cm sized billy it to small so i use a 12cm billy and based on that have my perfect set up ( i say billy cause i use a zebra but any pot you use really)

the Ikea drainer most use for a 10cm sized billy is a lot larger so IMO actually takes up a fair mount of space etc

you could end up with a set that takes up a lot of space and only boils a cup of tea

Found myself some rather large metal tins at the dump (cooking oilones) so going to make a self contained fir unit out of them. Will try and cook in there too though :D
Also found a skip full of crab pots (creels) and took two of them.
Going to whack them out when I'm out spearfishing and then weight them with rocks from the seabed where I put them down.
Simples :D
