opinions on petzl tikka xp2

i am looking at one of these but being new to headtorches i am looking for the opinions of others in the 40 quid range

i have the tikka plus and it has served me well! i reckon 40 quid is a lot to spend on a head torch unless you have specialist needs

been using the military petzl head toches for years and had this discussion with friends. even with a torch with the same number or leds and the same number of batteries that they have bought from asda of a cotswolds cheapest etc, is not as bright and doesnt last as long.....

the reason i like the military ones is because you dont have to cycle to ged the red light, its a flip filter and its also a switch instead of a button so it cant be turned on accidently....

well i use it for round camp, the battery life is great and ive never thought "i could do with more light"

dont really do a lot of walking in the dark though

i will be using mine for work,and night walking fishing etc.
i have a 4 lamp energiser at the moment but the beam is not well defined and generates alot of scattered spread and artifacts towards the outsides of the beam which make navigating over awkward terrain at night difficult.
i need a nice clear beam with variable light settings to maintain battery life, a red led would be handy for lamping

i saw one last week in the shop and had a play with one they are very bright i like it and it is on my wishlist too seems an excellent light i currently use a normal tikka

The Petzl tikka 2 is without doubt an awesome headtorch and I actually think 40 quid is a very reasonable price for this piece of kit. What I love about it is that it is so lightweight, regulated LEDs and batteries last for ever compared with the traditional bulb type !

I have the xp2, which gives a lot more light than the tikka plus [which i used to own], but the battery life is reduced accordingle 80 hrs high and 120 hrs on low. I really like the slide up defuser..so you can go from spot to flood, and to switch to red by holding the button down for about 2 secs. the price of £40 sounds like a bargin..snap it up

I've had the tikka plus for a few years now and really rate it. I've battered my tikka on branches, dropped it in the lake fishing, stood on it and took it for a surprise swim in the sea a couple of weeks ago. It still works fine

What hoppinmad said. I don't know much about torches but I'm delighted with mine. I like the fact that there's no rear battery pack so it allows you to lie back and read.

What duncwilson said. I've had mine since last May and it's still on the first set of batteries. Good red light for night map reading as well.

I paid £26, Go Outdoors with their, ahem..discount card so worth shopping around a bit I reckon

I can only add to the positive comments.
I've had mine for about 18months and used it for camping/fishing.
It is definately the best headlight I've used for helping me move about whilst fishing over dodgy terrain (wet rocks etc) at night and the red setting is great. One thing I reckon would be better (as in a previous post by trekkingnut in this thread) is to have the red beam via a flip up filter. Never thought about it before but this sounds easier than cycling through button clicks.
you won't regret buying one.
