Oil of Citronella + orange oil makes a very good repellant for meat-eating Black Flies (Simulidae) DEET is useless.
I hav a cloth jacket that I call my bug coat. The collar has soaked up a liter of repellants over the years!

Been using this for the past 20 years plus of summer trips to Sweden. Works for me but I try to avoid the worst areas and situations and always cover up.
Also all natural ingredients...
