I wanted to make a snow shelter but had to settle for a debris shelter hopefully going to spend all weekend in it

looks real cosy mate,..

do you have to wrap around the tree to get comfy,?

can you stretch out inside,...?

it looks proper dense and windproof

thats a comfy lookin debri shelter! you'll be snug in that! how many people would that fit in? And why o why have i never thought about using a tree like that?!?!

if there were a bit more snow you could have had a,..........................................................................................

We had 3 in there any more would be a squeeze, we had a hurricane lamp inside and it was toasty
Sorry about the poor quality pic but my phone camera does not like low light levels

It will be fairly snug but it should be warm, there was more room lying down because of the angle of the roof. I am going to extend the entrance round a bit to keep the wind out and have somewhere to put the bags

Looks good guys ,have a good one ! If you need more snow try it up this way next time we seem to have an excess here !!! remember keep the pic,s coming !

you could keep adding to it ,..like a snail shell!!

i think your on to a good design their seriously

Had a fairly good nights sleep despite it pissing down all night, the temperature was around 1 degree so not too bad but with the wind and rain felt worse, my mate Darren and I made the shelter larger as there were going to be 5 of us camping out but in the end the other 3 bailed so we had loads of space. The temperature in the shelter was about 4 degrees with just a hurricane lamp in there and with two of us and the lamp it went up to a toasty 6 degrees (it would have been a lot warmer with 5 of us). I was quite impressed with how water proof it was despite it tipping down we only had a few leaks and drips but it was a lot drier than outside although I was still glad I had my bivi bag. I'll post the pics up tomorrow when I have uploaded them

If you use a tree like that, any water that runs down the trunk, (as it tends to do unfortunately) usually ends up inside your shelter, you end up with a damp/wet floor area anyway.Basically; the tree is its own "down pipe"

It's the same reason you don't want any of the sticks that form the "frame" of the shelter, actually sticking through the thatch, the stick acts like a small gutter, the water running down the stick to the point where it drops off and "drips".

Probably not such an issue in snowy conditions mind you;)

Regardless; a good effort:35:.

hope this helps:)
