I`ve driven the road several times, but not as long as Kirkenes. Has always stopped at Tana bru, and driven south trough Karasjok and Kautokeino and home trough Finland and Sweden.
The road in the book is E6 wich runs from Gøteborg to Kirkenes.
There is is one ferry, from Bognes-Skarberget (86 NOK for a car below 6 meters length, and 32NOK per passenger). The sub sea tunnel to Honningsvåg, Nordkapp, is a toll road (145 NOK for a car and trailer, ++ for any passenger).
I don`t have any tips as I don`t know what you want hints about. If you could be mere spesific I`ll be happy to answer your questions.

I saw some of the youtube clip and most of the beginning is from Rv17 (now Fv17) wich ends where I live, in Bodø. Rv17 has many ferries (coastal road)and will thus be more expensive to drive.
