Todays Sunday Times contains a story that Northface's main supplier of down for their products force feeds Geese.
That's contrary to the usual claims made by the company such as the last selling point here.

So are they guilty of lying, apathy or incompetence? And should they be kicked for it?

The link says;

  • The grey goose down in this bag is purchased from small, family-owned farms that do not live-pluck or force-feed the geese
If this is not the case they should be kicked for it. I'm sick and tired of corporations lying and cheating to sell their stuff. I'd much rather they didn't make a claim than lie about it, because then you can make an informed decision. My default position now is a cynical one. Time for a change.

It would be naive to believe that the down & feathers arn't procured by live plucking.....these so called small farms couldn't supply the industrial quantities of down needed ....they can produce 4 times as much down a year by live plucking.......until Northface informs us from which countries they obtain their down , we have to assume the worst.......
As for force- feeding, it's very common even in so called modern countries like France, if you eat foie gras, you support this 'industry'

Hungary. The birds are bred for food primarily.

"The birds are artificially fattened by having funnels pushed into their beaks and then large amounts of corn mash are forced down their throats using a pressurised air hose."

The process is repeat three times a day with the intention of making the liver grow far bigger than it's natural size and develop the characteristic buttery consistency of Foie Gras.
North Face have admitted it and said they are working to find an alternative source but It may prove difficult because the majority of down from Hungary comes from Foie Gras geese.

They are still stating otherwise in their literature - they hope people won't ask questions - It's de rigeur these days to 'come clean' after being found lying. It's not good enough.

I'm afraid I don't subscibe to the "foie gras = evil" point of view, but if a company lies about the provenance of their product in order to increase sales then they should be sanctioned for it. I wonder how many of the people who would complain at foie gras production would eat farmed salmon...

Lets be honest!! To produce down in the quantity to supply the industrial fabrication of clothing & sleeping bags will never be a "sustainable, humane" process!! How can it be?? should we ask if there is any duck/goose shearers out there!!!!!

That's not the point - If companies lie about their sources and try to greenwash their products they should be held to account for it. If we know the truth we can make informed decisions about our purchases.

I'm with you there Southey, perhaps they shouldn't make bold claims when the opposite is true though. Just don't say anything would be my approach...

All this provedence noncence is just to give you that smug look if you want to pay for it.

Very good but are you prepared to give quite a Lot more of your money for a product that Ticks all of the increasing number of 'ethical' boxes??

Yes

All this provedence noncence is just to give you that smug look if you want to pay for it.

It's nothing to do with feeling smug - it's to do with corporations being honest. I really don't care how you spend your money, but I do care about corporate honesty. Lets not get off topic with this -

They lied. That's it.
