Night time wee breaks

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
As i am usually sharing a tent with Lisa when i go out camping i am a member of the get out go for whizz and get back in club. I always make sure i have a spare layer to put on so i stay nice and warm whilst out for the comfort stop.
its also a useful time to kick any bits of log into the embers to encourage them to burn off so i dont have loads of half burnt logs to deal with in the morning.

Just thinking about it, I don't get up in the middle of the night to go when I'm at home, but I seem to when out in the woods. Why is that?
I still sleep the same.

I just get out and pee :P But I adore the feeling of relief and then the warmth of the sleeping bag when you get back in :)

As for the men... you could get a length of hosepipe, rig it with a funnel shoved in one end and then the other end around the back of a tree and then using the power of bladder control... pee slowly lol!

The OP was talkin about festivals. i go to several folk festivals each year with a woman friend who isn't too keen on the hike through the mud to the khasi. I usually take a mid sized Khyam tent to festivals as we like a bit of luxury sometimes.

I also take a tThetford PortaPotti chemical toilet I bought at an auction once and keep it in the corner of the large living area, covered up in the day!

I have en-suite!

Still a sod having to get out of a warm sleeping bag though.

Wide-mouth nalgene. When I'm winter camping in -10-15 I want to keep the warmth in my bag. Also, no loud tent zipper noise waking everyone up!

lol great thread

this has been the bane of my outdoor life forever

doesnt matter how much i make sure i go b4 it waits till im comfy and relaxed and then i get the feeling

ive accepted it now and generally know i will be up 3 times before i can relax and slip into sleep

whether in hammock tent or just a bivi i love the way as each "get up and go comes " the distance from camp i wander to gets shorter
lol

i have been out in some serious weather but ive never used billy cans or bottles however several camp buddies i know do , thats why i tend to prefer using my own pots and pans

Old icecreme tubs are just as good!

Festivals are different, horrible facilities, more beer and more 'need to go' moments! After many festivals, I have decided to campervan it this year - expensive admittedly but this is definately going to be a 'holiday' with a shower, toilet, and bacon sandwiches on tap, without spending £5 a piece at rip off festivals. - Latitude here I come!

PS: Pukkelpop in Belgium is by far the best festival I have been to, for facilities, line up etc.

Sorry for not being a very bushcrafty reply.

Wide mouth Nalgene. Roll on side. Remove lid. Remove todger. Pee in bottle. Replace lid. Replace todger. Go back to sleep.

Nalgene bottle will act as hot water bottle for half an hour or so.

I'd not reccomend the pee over the side of the hammock method. There's a phenomenon known as "roll back" where gravity wins every time and rolls you back into the hammock causing a squirty fountain because by then you are in mid flow. Been there, done that.

If you go for the 'pee in a bottle in the hammock' variation make sure the bottle is big enough to take a full night's worth of pee - this could be as much as a litre or so. Otherwise, despite excellent technique you might still end up with a wet hammock/sleeping bag.

A compromise is to have a small piece of tarp etc on the ground under your hammock, get out (with no need to put on boots as you are standing on the bit of tarp), pee in a (big) bottle and get back in the hammock. Make sure the bottle allows you to hold it securely eg handle of some sort - otherwise if you drop it while going .......
