After the alternator went on my car and taking the battery with it the other day my neighbour gave me a bunch of axe heads and an adze to cheer me up.
What he gave me was an Elwell 2 3/4lb, Spearwell 6lb (war dept 1969 crows foot mark), Gilpin hatchet ( stamped 1900 dont know why), Whitehouse 4 1/2lb kent ( marked Whitehouse Cannock Warented), an un marked kent pattern about 2lb folded steel not forged and an Adze, Marples No3 Hibernia.
The Gilpin was just a blob of rust when I first got it, thinking that it was just a cheap forign job wasnt untill I attacked it with the wire brush on a bench grinder that I saw the Gilpin name, sadly mostly gone as the poll had been used as a hammer.
The un marked kent had a steel pipe welded on for a handle, that took me about 2 hours to cut, grind and file off, the old boy who gave them to me does like to weld steel pipe on to tools when the wood ones break
All have now been sanded and await handles and sharpening
