Oh it burns, probably the only safe use for the clippings, tbh.
It shreds your hands tidying them up though. I think I'd lay out a mat of something else and sweep the hawthorn clippings into the middle and roll it up, tie it off, and then cut to length for burning.

Sorry to sound so down about it Spandit; it really is a beautifully compact hedge, and encourages wildlife; but having cleared up behind the pruning of one for over ten years, and my brother did it for nearly another twenty, we'd just had enough.
I let the hawthorn outside our side fence grow and it's now a small tree.

The gateway through my fence is hidden under the Hawthorn tree :)
