Never Been Used and Never Gonna Be!

Hi

Not particularly practical in the field but I bought it because it is simply a beautiful piece of work. Its history I fear is a sad one having been made to mark the retirement of a gamekeeper to whom it was given as a leaving present. I do not know any more than that but suspect the keeper is no more as he almost certainly would not have parted with it I am sure. The blade has never been used and the boars head is solid silver. Made by Pat Mitchell in Sheffield

It really is a stunning piece of work!

I can vouch for the quality of Mitchell blades; I have one sitting here waiting for me to finish ot off, and another six on order...

Can you do a closeup of the hallmarks round the boar's head?

K.
I will try and do some super macro shots of the hallmark at the weekend and post them up

Hi Silverback,

I know that knife :)

It was made as a leaving gift, I don't know the keepers name but he worked on the Chatsworth estate. It was made about 7 years ago, how long have you yourself had it?

Indian Sambar stag for the scales fixed with s/s pins. As you rightly say the Boars head pommel is cast in silver. The pommel was cast by a local silver/goldsmith, Jack Spencer, the hallmark should include his sponsor mark, JS. I actually still have a very small stock of these heads, which were modeled specifically for use as pommels on knives, cast in both silver and bronze.

The blade steel is ATS34 and is hardened to Rc57. Well capable of being used even if not the most comfortable knife in the world

Hope this helps,

Stuart Mitchell.

:notworthy Wow thanks for the info. I bought it about four years ago from eBay having fallen in love with it on sight. It is one of my most treasured possessions and hence my reason for making the decision never to use it. My comment regarding not being practical in the field was down to not wanting to taint such a beautiful piece of work as opposed to the handling and comfort of the knife, so apologies if this maybe came across in slightly the wrong way. Might I be so cheeky as to enquire how much you would consider the knife to be worth as I have often wondered and really ought to have it itemised on my household insurance?

I am truly made up at finally getting the answers to the questions I have had since it first came into my possession so thanks again for having taken the time to provide the information :You_Rock_
