Hi.
Could anyone help with ideas for how to make natural leather dye.
Have a few projects on the go that I would like to use natural dye on.

An old fella I got talking to in Crete told me that while occupied they used acorns for boot blacking and coffee substitute, sadly my greek at the time was not good enough to discover how, but this info and bob the baker's vinegaroon in a search might get better results for recipes.

Walnut skins (from the outer covering) make a very effective and long lasting stain. It certainly stains your skin for weeks.

Yes, and whilst you are removing the green outer layer (the bit outside the nut we all love and know), remember to wear gloves or you'll have black hands as well :) Trouble is, you may be a bit late in the year to get the fresh ones you need.

I tried coffee once, only left it in for twenty minutes. After a few days the leather had cracked and you could pull it apart with your fingers.

If you use vinegaroon you will need to nutralize the reaction using sodium Bicarbonate because it will react with whatever it comes into contact with eg knife blade and handle.

This is the result you can get, although it will smell like a tramp who has just eaten cold chips for a week or so. :)

These were done using vinegaroon.
