The work is still done by the women up here. It is very hard work , the hide stinks until its part way through the processes.

 

[Robson Valley]

I still have, from 1964, a pair of double-soled, knee-high, smoke tanned mukluks. Heaven in snow at -40C.
Still have my 60" trailbreaker snow shoes, too.

I miss the smell of fresh smoke-tanned hide.
