OK, we'll go for reeds, any idea why the cotton / string whipping ? that really doesn't look standard or original.

It is for bagpipe reeds. Scottish pipers pay a fortune for soft cotton (it's really hemp now) yellow thread. I had two of them nearly fight over a ball of it that I had for sale.
