My friend let me play with his sak

He's well chuffed. I used an old chopping board for the scales so I think they could be sycamore or beech. I put a nice leather lanyard on it with a four strand round braid.

Not sure but thats what I thought as well as our choping board looks like that and is made from rubber wood.

with great difficulty

I used a needle file to make the groove and after I had glued it all together the tweezers and the tooth pick didn't fit so I modified them both (I made them thinner) and now they have more than enough friction to hold them in place but are still usable.
