I've only done a few wood spirits, and they all come out looking rather judgemental - I need to work on that.

just keep carving mate, you will develop your own style that you will continually tweak until you are relatively happy with it but there is always room for improvement. you have some superb carvers over there, I particularly admire Jeff Phares work, he is truly gifted.
