That is generally my impression.

I think, a beginner should start with a cheaper carbon steel blade and I often recommend the Opinel No 8 Carbone (Made in France). But the Mora 840 (Made in Sweden) or something similar like the Mora Companion Heavy Duty (Made in Sweden) or the Hultafors OK 4 (which is made in Taiwan) are good options to learn carving and blade sharpening too.

I find the decision which steel pretty difficult. It really depends on how whet the expected circumstances will be...

Because I never had a problem with carbon blades I think I would have bought the carbon Garberg. But:
I got a very generous offer out of this forum and will get a stainless steel version.
It's time to dig out my old canoe anyway...
