Measuring the thickness of something.
A micrometer works beautifully well because you don’t just tighten it to where you think it should be. The two knurled knobs on the right - the bigger one roughly moves it into place. The smaller one when you turn it to fully tighten against what you’re measuring slips so you can get it perfect. You can measure the thickness was of a piece of paper easily!
I have the imperial version (thou”).
They are beautifully engineered and the handle has a torque wrench (the micro adjuster) so that you always apply exactly the same pressure when measuring and you don’t exert pressure on the gauge.
It’s a very fine screw so it wouldn’t be difficult to bend the frame (if the fine adjuster wasn’t there) by a couple of thou” (microns) even though it’s cast iron.
The lock means that it is perfect for repeat lathe work.
Wish I could justify buying it but I can’t just now.

I learnt to use one of these when I was about seven and found my granddad's box of them. Great things.
