Yeah had problems with this before. It depends on the network, for example Vodaphone is the best(Coverage wise) but you are better off on Orange in Wales. O2 not bad either. Have stood in the middle of nowhere with a Vodaphone user, and I was chating away happily. They took a step forward, and had full signal. Weird.
Battery life, it is worth doing a google search for your phone. A lot of them do stupid things that you can stop, or have apps that can effect how much they use. Also have a nose on evilbay for an extra battery, battery charger(sometimes you can get a little box with a spare battery which takes the same plug as your charger), or my prefrence a stand with extra battery charging space. Have one of the last for my PDA it rocks, for the real world as well. Flat-ish battery swap them, and leave the flat one to charge. Also the little charger could charge a spare battery using one of those torches or a panel.
