Bait for crabs, or just for kids to be able to see a fish close up, and then let it go again.
I don't know if kids are allowed to do it now, but we used to do it so that we could catch and see sticklebacks up close.
We just used a cut up bottle to do that.

Why do you need to trap minnows? What do you do with them once they've been trapped?

Assmery is from the USA where the use of live bait is legal so there's a big market selling or trapping them for fishing.
Trapping minnows for the live bait trade is not for me. This trap is too small.
I made this one for display at my net making demonstrations.
I have made these traps for friends and relatives to trap minnows and crayfish so that they and their children can study and then release whatever they catch
