Mini-skrama mini project

I finally got around to handling my mini-skarma blade that’s been sat around for years.
I have ground the spine of the blade to change the profile slightly, and the ground the handle’s choil and palm swell to allow a bit more space for all four fingers. Scales were salvaged from old oak floor boards.

Nice! Not what I would llike to have but still, nice looking. Looks old. Some patina on the blade and it could be granddads old knife.

That’s turned out alright Leon, I never did get round to handling mine, it’s in a box somewhere with a slab of orange G10.

Thanks Rich, it got there eventually.
I was thinking of using hornbeam for the scales but that required more work. Orange G10 would be nice I reckon.

Its a handy size knife that fits in a lot of cutting edge, and it strops to a really sharp edge too. I can pocket carry it, courtesy of a cheap-torch sheath but it’s a bit naff.
I was hoping to pick up a mini-Skrama sheath from varusteleka with my next order, but it looks like they don’t sell them separately like they do with their larger knives.

I hope it´s Ok to borrow this thread, headline suites me too.

I made my Mini-Skrama into a neck carry with a locking system so the knife will not fall out. Locking system also locks the knife to the sheath so the knife can not get lost.
Picture should speak for it self.

Impressive pieces both of these. I just adore pocket carry fixblades. With one of these, it looks like I’ve got enough little wantables from Varusteleka now to put them an order of stuff

You get some extra points if you order it correctly as "Kalakukko". :D

I have one skeleton JP 85 still in the process of getting a proper handle.

There was a NATO exercise in Finland some time ago, people visited Leka and the Yankees baught almost all JP85s as apparently the length was within regulations for garrison carry.

Everytime someone puts a link to varusteleka I take a look around and see stuff that I want. Somehow they even make fish cock sound like something I need in my life. :D

The Korpisoturi knife looks interesting too.

I just read this on the Varusteleka site:

"The heat treatment we use leaves the surface of the steel softer than the inside. This actually functions a lot like fancy differential heat treatments making these knives very tough. As the surface is softer, any microscopic fractures or unevennesses in the steel will not cause problems like they would if the steel was hardened all the way through. The end result is virtually zero problems caused by material defects!"

Didn't know you could do that. Just out of interest, how is that acheived ... that's to say soft on the outside and hard on the inside. Shorter tempering time?

Tempering at high temp very short time would cause something like that. I don't know how they do that but I can ask next time I'll visit Sotima (their bar).
