Hey all looking through Millets today i saw some of these Midgie coils, well for 5 of them is £10 and basically its a little coil kind of like an insence burner that says you burn one end and it will smoulder for 8 hours and deter all biting insects from around 30metres around you for 8 hours. Now i was going to buy a few packs of them and thought i ve seen crap like this before, so before i buy them i would ask if anyone has ever come across them and do they work?

Cheers

Yes, midges don't like smoke, but I don't think they are worth the money really. The amount of smoke they give off is no good for outside use. You could try some birch polypore, light an edge of it and blow it out so it stays smouldering and hang up slightly upwind the smoke will pass through your site and keep the midgy numbers down.

We camp beside rivers so mozzies are an issue. We use the coils and they do work but probably need 3 coils to cover your average pitch.
