Anyone ideas on how to solve the Scottish midge problem with a tarp? Cave type pitch mostly in bad weather but also use a flying V in good weather. So no one set pitch.

Any solutions?

Could get a nest for cave pitch made up but only ine pitch could be used then on. 2.4m sqaure tarp BTW and really would not like to add too much weight. ALso don't want to go back to a tent on the grounds they are heavy or very expensive.

Don't know how heavy it would work out but if you made a 2nd 'tarp' out of noseeum mesh with edges & diagonals in light webbing and pegging loops as req. it would give you a versatile setup.

Its noseeum mesh they use. Its not too expensive from GG but the carriage and any export duties is an issue.

The single net fromlifesystems or sea to summit do tend to be up in the 200g mark. It all adds up you know. A week of gear and food and all so trying to be as light as poss.

What about a bivvy with a bug net and a bit more headroom ? I've got an MLD Trailstar and Superlight bivy on there way to me which I'm going to be using in the Lakes and Scotland over the summer and on the TGO next year

The Titanium Goat Ptarmigan is another to look at

vango banshee tent weighs 2 kilos...and its under £80
so i wouldnt rule a tent off

tarp net and bivy bag will be damn near that in weight

i know a tarp is nice but so is a peaceful nights sleep away from midges save the tarp when they aren't aboot
also you can leave the porch open on the banshee and sleep inside the mesh inner feels like a tarp that way

Erm, not quite the same weight. Tarp well mine is something like 500g, bivvy 300g and the 81g bug net thing that is out of stock at Winwwoods Outdoors is kinda lighter than 2kg. Try 1119g less. I know I can get my tarp down to something like 235g-ish if I buy a new MLD thing I've seen second hand somewhere and the same person will throw in the same company's bug nest thingy which is not much different in weight.

It's funny you should say that, when I was camping up near Ullapool as a kid once, the only relief we got from midges was to use a lighter and a can of deodorant. It kind of worked for a few minutes and then they came back twice as fierce after that. I think we ended up packing the tent and walking back into the village and the safety of the B&B my folks were staying in.
