I'm going to make a cooking tripod at work out of 10mm steel bar I have a lad at work who will bend me the eyes on them but how will I blacken them . Will I have to heat them up and quench them in cooking oil to season them

Use an oil that won't combust at that temp. Unless you're going to cook directly on the metal it doesn't need to be food safe.

Ummm this is all absolute nonsense...

Quenching mild steel in oil would have no effect on it's long term use. None. You would also have a sticky residue and would wipe off the majority of the oil trying to get it clean.

I'd just warm it up slightly with a blow torch and wipe down with boiled linseed oil on a rag. Allow this to dry and you're sorted.

If you specifically want them to be black then paint them with stove paint.
