Given apples are ripening early I wonder what the chances are that Medlars may ripen naturally and not need bletting. I kown of some trees nearby so will be keeping my eye on them. Anyone tasted these fruit (bletted or not)?

Medlar, little known traditional fruit tree, native to uk, but not popular any more as the fruit are rock hard when ripe, and they have to be left to rot (bletting) to a jelly-like consistency before they are edible. I'll have some from a friend in a few months (its early yet) and show them to you Dave.

As others have said, they make a good jelly/jam.
