Maple carving?

After Drew's funeral, I went for a walk by the river Tee at Piercebridge and someone had kindly been pruning the trees around the bridge site.

I picked up a really straight walking stick sized piece which looks like it may be Maple, the closest I could find that I think it had been cut from looked like Norway Maple.

Any tips or suitable patterns for hand carving it?
