Buy the Hammock Camping book from Ed Speer.
Great book with a lot of information, including a step-by-step tutorial for making your own hammock!

I bought it from eBay, but It's also available from Amazon.

I make them for the kids basing my design on a nomad jungle hammock I've had for years.

basically its an 8 x 6 ft polyester type fabric which is strong light and small packing. you lay it out, fold it over so its 8 x 3 ft then stitch the ends up folding it over to make the tunnel for the hanging rope/tape.

the result is either a standard 3ft hammock which you can add a kip mat to stiffen or even better you crawl inside it jungle style which stops you falling out and keeps the bug off

it fits in a pocket being the same size as a packed hootchie.
