Magnet Fishing

I have tried it in local canals, found the odd bit of fishing tackle and a very rusted Opinel. In fact it came in handy the other day when reroofing the shed to pick up any nails that got lost.
Someone did find a hand grenade not far from where I tried last year, so caution made me have a rethink.

All the valuable stuff is non ferrous anyway?
I don't know anything about metal detecting but I'd read somewhere that some of the advanced modern metal detectors can also detect non-ferrous metals such as gold, silver or platinum.

Just a point:
How much of the old ordinance discovered IN UK by detectors, construction work, magnets etc has exploded spontaneously in say the last twenty years.

I know that a bomb blew up in an “unanticipated explosion” in 2023 but it was already being emptied by the experts. (No one hurt)

I’m not suggesting that I wouldn’t be very cautious not to say scared if I found any but I am not aware of any injuries caused by WW2 and older explosives in the last few decades.

I imagine that magnet fishing is a very interesting pastime. My one attempt was practical rather than interest but the anticipation was there. I bet most bridges over canals etc are well fished by now.

How long does a metal detector last under water? :D

I wonder if one of these underwater metal detectors could be adapted for fishing purposes by using it on a line to find non-ferrous metals in canals and ponds etc. Then after a discovery you could use another method to recover the metal if it seems likely that it could be valuable?
