Scrape it like you would do making a featherstick, only a bit more finer (hope you get it). The magnesium isn't that hard it wrecks your blade.

Other method would be to scrape it like you would scrape Parmezan cheese from a big block. E.g. keep your knife (edge) on a 90 degrees angle on the scraping part of the Mg block.
Though I don't know if this has any impact on your knife. Personally I don't think it has, you can easily carve you name in it with a paperclip (I did).

Becarefull the scraping aren't blown away by the wind :yikes: Best to catch them on something sticky - something with some vaseline on it.
 
If the spine of your knife has sharp edges. you shouldn't have a problem with scraping it with the spine.
