As for a ferrule i use either 15mm or 22mm soldered end caps.

These are available from any plumbing merchants/B&Q etc.
Basically i shave down the end till its a tight fit in the end cap.Before i force the end cap onto the stick i drill it with a small drill. The drill bit should be slighty larger than the nail you are going to use.
Force to end cap on and hammer the nail through the hole you have drilled. Bob's yer uncle. Nail is harder than the copper fitting so should last longer.
