That looks a nice piece of work.
Is the Bay you are carving the one we use for cooking?
It looks like a good carving wood.May have to give it a whirl.
My son is coming to Lancing in July with the Scouts.I'm busy carving little spoons in Bog Oak for him to
bring as trades and gifts for the natives as is traditional when we visit the colonies! :lmao:
He can't wait to get there.Seems like they have alot planned to pack into a fortnight.
...Or maybe I'm getting old.
Cheers , Simon

Yep, the leaves are used for cooking.
I cut down so many Bay tree's throughout the year, i thought i'd try keeping some to carve, as it's no good for burning!
What is bog wood like?
I frequent cumbria on a regular basis (rock climbing, canoeing etc), and it's not a tree i'm familiar with?

Bog oak is really nice to carve.Colour ranges from mellow brown to almost jet black.
It's quite hard and takes the edge off the blades quickly but keeps the edges sharp and good
for showing detail.
If you are coming over this way message me and I'll give you some bits to have a go with
as I have a large box of them at the moment and will never get through it all.
I posted some pics under Spoons from the Black Lagoon on this site.
Cheers , Simon

Bog Oak comes from Oak trees which fall into bogs and are preserved by the
peculiar chemistry of the bog so that they remain as usable wood for thousands
of years. The box I have now claims 3,000 years and came from Ireland although
there are sources all over the uk too.
