Here are three bowls and one spoon that I've gotten done in the last month or so. They are all birch. I also took some in progress pics while I was working on the large bowl.
Start with a round log. BTW, that is my carving block out of cedar. The guy that delivered it carried it by hand, it weighs a ton!
Split it in half.
Good music makes carving in a 110º garage bearable.
Remove the pith of the tree to prevent cracking and flatten the top.
Trace the outline of the shape you want.
Saw off the excess.
Start bringing the roundness up.
Both edges are rounded.
Always strop your tools about every 5 minutes of carving to keep them nice and sharp. Oops, you can see a drop of sweat on the ground.
The rough shaping with the axe is done.
Now I flatten the bottom with my Becker BK-9.
Hollow out the bowl and trim the edges. Sorry I didn't get more pics of the hollowing stage.
Now I finish by sanding and oiling with a mixture of linseed (flaxseed) oil and beeswax.
Finished bowl along with two small bowls. The rectangular bowl was submerged in coffee for a few hours to give it a darker color.
The bottoms with my makers-mark.
Small oval bowl.
Large bowl.
All of the bowls that I've carved. I didn't realize that they go nicely as pairs.
Here's my latest spoon.
Phew! That was a lot of pics!
Hope you guys enjoy!
