I agree with that. Some plants move around a lot in the charts. Happens frequently nowadays when DNA comes into play. Nature isn't always easy on that old system of Linneaus!
I'm still leaning towards crabapple, Perhaps Toringo Crabapple. Scientific name varies; Pyrus sieboldii, Malus toringo, Pyrus toringo, Malus sieboldii,
There are of course varieties with names like "scarlet" etc.. Don't know of the fruits internals, but apple fruits can vary a lot, so not necessarily a reason to say it's not apple.
I agree it's almost certainly not a cherry.
