Long term knife storage - how do you do it?

I know the best way to keep a knife in good nick is to use it!
However I have a couple of decent knives that I don't use much now as I prefer my BCUK Spydie. I want to store them properly so they don't start rusting etc and I don't want to sell them as they hold sentimental value.
I know the knife shouldn't be stored in the sheath but what should I put on the blade to stop rusting?
Do I need to worry about the wood at all?

Rennaisance wax is the best stuff. Applied then allowed to dry, then polished, then repeat about five times so the whole blade is coated with a very thin and hard film. It needs to be polished to remove all white residue and the polishing will harden the layers further. It's no good just wiping it over then leaving it, you need to build up the fine, hard layers for full coverage and to get the best from the wax properties.
