In all honesty, the forging didn't really do much - I mostly ground/cut the hammered bits away in the course of making it

No, I didn't, but I hadn't heated/quenched it beforehand either. I was counting on the fact that after heating in the forge, the hammering would help.

It's a short blade & not going to be used for batoning. I'll see how the edge fares but it was more of an exercise in handling than cutlering.

Also have you tried bending a scalpel blade? They're pretty brittle. A machete blade, on the other hand, needs to be more ductile because of the battering it gets
