Lime mortar for old stone buildings allows them to breath and dry naturally. Modern cements and paints are the killers of old buildings, as are unaware builders and owners.

Hi everyone - thanks for your interest in my blog - I wonder is Lime making more of a comeback in England than its very slow revival here in Ireland?

I added a new page which goes into more detail about Lime itself - http://limewindow.wordpress.com/what-is-lime/
Also we managed to get our guide rafters up at last - http://limewindow.wordpress.com/2012/08/05/cottage-guide-rafters/

If you have any insights into how Lime is being used in your locality I'd love to hear about it.

Bushwacker bob - for some reason (too expensive?) Cement wasn't readily available in Ireland until the early 1900s so our stone cottages, although built with Lime mortar, suffered widespread rendering with cement in the 20s & 30s, due to pure ignorance of the incompatibility of the two materials. Buildings that escaped being cement rendered (left alone entirely) have lasted much better than those that (with good intentions) were rendered.
