This would have been dramatic. It’s highly likely this is a lightning strike, the tree is in a managed deer park, locked at night, lots of walkers by day. It’s also in the centre of the park so a very unlikely place for vandalism. My guess is this was struck at night and burned throughout, then the sides fell away.

Its said that Oaks attract lightning.
Historically the church has sometimes described lighting strikes as a judgement from god.
Problem came when the highest buildings in the land (Churches, Cathedrals and so on) were getting more strikes than the pesky sinners.:)

Another one. Look into the background and you can see the other one. Definitely not an area to shelter in a storm!

Added a couple of extra pics, because the sun came out and really lit the park up. :)

Looks nice there, worth a visit. Might also add a bit of that char to my tinder collection.

Let me know if you do, though it’s about to look a bit bleak as the last of the leaves fall. It’s a nice area, I walk the dog out of the back of where I live and about 1/4 mile away is an ancient spring with sacred heritage. Luckily it’s not marked on maps.

I’m just chucking this stuff away at the moment, I’ve got a whole tree of it if you’re looking for tinder.
