Leave signs

I was walking in the woods today and saw a small pile of leaves from a conker tree that appeared to have been nibbled at the end of the stalk.

I know there are grey squirrels in the area and I'm just wondering are they responsible for this and why do they do it?

Horse Chestnut leaves must be very tasty - I've seen a heard of cows standing on its back legs trying to reach overhanging leaves. Although I suspect cows would leave bigger bite marks...
