I want to buy a leather belt (or have one made) that is good enough to use also use as a strop.

Does anyone have suggestions of which one and where to buy from (don't want to spend a fortune either!)

Next have some really thick brown leather belts that are 1 1/2 inches wide. About £12 - £14. I've used them for years and they make excellent strops. Top quality.

Depends entirely on what you call a fortune.

you can pick up belts in charity shops but I've never seen any good leather ones in 15 years of looking.

You can, as Jonathan suggested; buy one from the likes of Next etc.
In my experience; you never get proper heavy duty buckles on commercial belts, the leather is of widely variable quality too.

If you fancy diy; You can also buy a belt strap, buckle, thread, needles, awl, edge groover, overstitch wheel, hole punch, dye and finishing wax and make yourself a belt.

I can make you a belt from 3.5mm veg tanned cowhide, with a proper cast brass buckle, if you'd like one made:)

Easily done by yourself too.

If I can do it anyone can.

All you need are a strip of bridle leather and a brass buckle off the bay.

That looks amazing! WHat sort of cost would that be?

Cheers

Roughly about a tenner for the strap and a fiver for the buckle.

I already had the brass loop, thread (hidden by the brass furniture), awl and hole punch.

I like it pretty plain and don't have all the other wee tools of a leatherworker.

Getting one made by Rancid B is well worth it though.

I can heartily recommend Rancid Badger's work, it is awesome, you won't go wrong getting one of his. Barn Owl also made one for me and it's a sturdy great belt and simple to make as he says. Buying the right stuff it's really a matter of putting it together, sort of flat pack kit.
