Lawn bowling balls

I often see what looks like wooden bowling balls at boot markets, are they made of iron wood.
If so they should be good for making knife handle.

Do you mean the proper Lawn bowls about 6" in diameter? If you do and the bowls are definitely wooden then they're made from Lignum viatae

They make good sgian dubh handles and excellent mallets for woodcarving if they are lignum vitae.

I know a guy that uses then to make the head of a carving mallet

There are also traditional wooden bowls, careful if you are going to cut through them as there is a bias in them.
