SWMBO is looking for a pair of all-weather trousers for travelling. There seem to be some new ones on the market, but not in her size. She is size 8 or 10 and is 4'11" tall so needs a short leg. The problem with the ones she has tried is that the leg is too long and the designs are such that they cannot be taken up because of taped seams, adjustable cuffs etc. This also presents a problem in mail ordering. We have a GoOutdoors, Cotswold and Decathlon within fairly easy reach.
She hates over-trousers, by the way.
Any help or suggestions welcome.

No experience of ladie's trousers I'm afraid, but it may be useful to know that I've had very good results turning up hems with taped seams using that fusion tape stuff that you iron in using a wet cloth; I've done a few pairs like that and never had a problem with them..................very quick to do and very cheap, too.

I buy men's trousers because they often don't make women's in large sizes and they are sometimes not as good quality. Just cut off the bottom of the legs and either stitch or use the iron-on hem stuff. I find that fiddly bits like adjustable cuffs are just a nuisance anyway.

Rohan make small and petit-ish sizings, and the legs turn up very easily.

NorthFace are renowned for managing small adult sizes very well indeed.

66North do so too, and the clothing is brilliant, but it's expensive.

At your lady's size I think it might be worth while if she looked at youth clothing. Some of the better quality makes for teenagers would probably fit her. Craghoppers (which are an incredible footer of too many pockets and far too bumpfly at the waist for most women, make good youngsters sizings and they are widely available.

Mountain Warehouse also do middle sizes of growing teenager/ small adults very well and they're not expensive.

Cranmere….the Danish Defence Force ladies clothing is pretty good to fit curvy little ladies, if you can find it. I have had to sew in waist darts on every pair of trousers I have ever bought unless they're fully elasticated, but those ones came shaped and easily adjustable :)
If you come across them, will you let me know ? I wish I'd bought more.

Thanks for the info about the Danish trousers, Mary. I'll keep my eyes open. I don't have pronounced curves so women's trousers are often too tight on the waist for me which is why I can get away with men's.

If they're big enough for my hips then they still need at least four darts to fit the waist :sigh:….my Dad described me as Clyde Built …..broad in the beam and unsinkable :D :D and that was when I was slim and needed eight darts to fit.

Sounds like Mrs O. has the other problem of being both slim and short. Rohan and North Face are pretty good for slim and neat.

She says thank you very much for this and she will be following up your suggestions. Thanks from me too: I had an inkling of where the good advice would come from when I posted. You've saved me from hours of trailing round the shops in tow!
I'll let you know how she gets on.
