I spent my day with our local Explorer unit making knives. We used factory made blades and I did some intial work to speed up the process.
Thier Leaders had a go too but one lad missed out due to an ear infection but I will help hime with it when hes better. The Lads have all been through my scouts as it happens and one is my Young Leader.

We had a great day and I think they did well.

wow, very impressive. I'll have to get my explorers up there and see if i can show them something to get inspired about ;)

Great Stuff Alf, Hopefully it changes all involved their previous opinions on knives for the better. Plus you cant beat a scandi you've made. :)

Thanks for the comments everyone I am glad you like them.

One of them is already planning to make a letter opener and has asked me for some materials. His dad helped me a lot with it as he is into wood turning and carving etc. Dad made his knife in advance to practice and gain experience to help me out.
They all enjoyed it and stuck in and got on with it. Many years ago it was common for Scouts to make thier own knife often due to cost though.

Sheath making next and I will show the results.

They all have experience using knives over several years.

Duncan we may be interested in spoon knives.

They were all encouraged to create what they wanted and given a choice of materials though for cost and time reasons everyone had the same blade and bolster.

They will respect and know how to look after knives now. Scouts are a great organisation, well done Brancho.

Well I got the last Explorer Scout to make his knife yesterday at my house. He got one to one tuition and here are the results.

wow! i just wish somthing like that was possible in my area.. (sadly not as we have a high local knife crime rate. we tend to get looked at in askance from the police and the parents if we even use SAKs, (not that that stops us, and on camp opinels are the order of the day))

as long as you are within the law let them look. Giving kids the knowledge that knives are tools is what is actully needed in this country instead of demonising them.
