I have a relative holidaying in the US at the moment and they asked very kindly if I'd like anything brought back.

Are there any small 'only available in the states' bits of kit that I should be thinking about ?? Stuff around the thirty forty quid mark and small in size as they have to be lugged back.

Geographically she's in the Smoky Mountains, perhaps that's of some bearing.

All the best - Dan.

This thread asked a similar question not long ago http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=96481 . If you know where your relative will be staying, then you can find the nearest REI or other store for them. There is a thread on the US site Trailspace http://www.trailspace.com/forums/gear-selection/topics/50090.html which might be of help.

This place looks interesting http://www.noc.com/noc-gatlinburg/ , and of course you can find a store local to them by using Yelp.com

Leatherman tools might be good, although 'knives' might be troublesome with Homeland Security when flying. We don't get Black Diamond stuff here much, so possible something from them (headtorch?), Go Pro, and possibly sleeping bag liners, etc from Kelty. Gregory, etc. There are always fleeces from Outdoor Research, and stuff from Sierra Designs. And there are always T-shirts from Old Navy! http://www.oldnavy.com/

Personally, i think this might be useful http://www.rei.com/product/758042/sea-to-summit-pocket-trowel, but you might have to explain what you need it for!

....Leatherman tools might be good, although 'knives' might be troublesome with Homeland Security when flying......

Knives aren't a problem if packed away in your checked luggage where they're innaccessible during flight. At least not on this end.

You say he's in the Smokys? Then I take it he'll probably be going to Smoky Mountain Knife works? www.smkw.com

Maybe he's taking a tour of the Jack Daniels Distillery? If so they have loads of memorabilia (shot glasses, decanters, clothing, etc.)

Maybe he'll be near the Lodge cast-iron wares factory or one of their outlet shops? www.lodgemfg.com

There are also loads of shops in the area selling buckskin clothing (jackets, boots, pants, etc.)

Offer to do a barter with some Bushcraft USA guys in the area- bring over some Rohan, Montane, Paramo or Buffalo kit and trade them for what you want.

This is the stuff that we can't get easily over on this side of the pond that is made in GB and cheaper for you guys- everybody wins....

A mate of mine came over from Scottsdale Arizona recently. He brought a superfly tarp, about £70, and a sog powerlock 2 EOD. This worked out about £38.
His words were "you'd have a heart attack in the outdoors stores over here"
There's tonnes of bargains to be had over the pond.

Lawson at Mountain fitter has his excellent Titanium 7" shepherd hook stakes on offer at $1.50 each. Well worth bringing over and Lawson is a top guy ;)

Mountain Equipment Coop is also well worth getting some bits from. The MEC hut booties are $25 each and unbelievably good.
