I found a Kingfishers nest the other day while I was out in my canoe. I had seen the adult birds at the site before, but you can't really see it from the top of the opposite bank which is about 25ft high and very steep.
I got right in to the bottom of the opposite bank in my canoe and pulled some small branches in front of me and waited. Almost straight away one of the adult birds landed on the perch in front of the nest hole with a small fish in its bill.
As soon as its feet touched the perch the young in the nest started to call (which is a whirring/chirring sound). After a short pause it flew into the nest to feed it's young then flew out again and shot off down stream so I paddled off up stream........
I also saw three Cuckoos that morning chasing each ther around.
