Am making a Christmas wreath, going to add pinecones.

I have some of those long ones (No idea what tree) And want to use both open and closed.

They are wet outside and so closed...but you bring them inside and they puff up like a cross hedgehog!

any ideas?
 
yeah, varnish seems like the best thing to try. Get some dry, very dry, then dip in varnish, might do two coats, one thinned a little. Allow to drain and dry. That should impede them taking on moisture, but I would not want to bet that it would stop them entirely.
