Jute tinder

Not sure if anyone has tried this, but Jute string (looks just like sisal) makes fantastic tinder when the fibres are teased out into a ball.

It's a bit fiddly to produce as it takes a long time to tease out a large amount of fibres but goes up a treat!

I've seen it for sale in Asda and B&Q.

Or you can buy "Plumber's Hemp" from B & Q, which I suspect is just raw jute fibre (or it could really be hemp fibre).

Toddy let me have some flax fibres - as well as cordage it makes great tinder. I guess it's the oil in it.

'Flash paper' as used by magicians also works well.

I carry a 2" ball of Jute 4 ply twine in my kit. It's separates easily and fluffs up nicely to catch a spark. Reminds me, I need to test it with the spark-lite tool.

And the list goes on. I find jute to be an excellent (and low cost) medium in which to learn netting, basketmaking, etc. Over here, jute can be had for $1.00 for 365 feet. And it's a lot faster than making natural source cordage, especially for learning applications.

A handy way to sprarate jute from cord to the tinder fiber is to
1 separate theteisted pair into single strands
2 take a single strand and twist counter-clockwise if right handed to loosen strand
3 pull apart into wispy fiber groups
4 then break apart folding the fiber oer themselved as you would with cedar
5 once done roll in the palm of your hand or on leg into a ball for later use or use a series of the jute balls to use a a tinder coal.
