Interesting link :D
Thanks John

iirc Barrie Andrian worked as the nightshift supervisor diver on the Mary Rose before she and Nick built the crannog. Astonishing amount of material that came up in good condition :)

cheers,
M

Would kill to just hold one of the bows for a minute just to feel the cross section balance and weight. Often find me coverting the one in Manchester Uni museum.

I would nip in and ask them if you find yourself there - the dockyard is well worth a visit. I never asked at the Mary Rose - but at Fort Nelson (one of the Royal Armouries), the curators were very kind to me and allowed me to handle several ehibits

I might just do that. Maybe even ask at the uni,, I would be able to learn so much just by getting my hands on it for a min as most of the tiller work i do is by touch, your eyes lie all too often.

All of these places have a built in 'educate' and 'inform' ethos and an aim to help researchers. The staff are in many instances enthusiasts themselves; the kind of people who really appreciate skilled work and understand where you're coming from :D

I second BR; you can only ask :) and it could turn out brilliantly :D

cheers,

For me I think if you take along pictures or examples of your work, perhaps even write in advance and explain your interest and what you hope to discover and maybe even make an offer in return, you will increase your chances dwardo. I got really lucky in one place just chatting to a curator. I spent a long time looking at an exhibit and he approached me and asked if I understood what I was looking at (very nicely). I explained my interest in the subject but that I couldn't understand how a particular item worked. Cue the keys coming out - a search for a pair of gloves and us both handling it etc. I took him shooting some hostoric rifles later as a thank you :). A member of the Royal Armouries and he had never had the chance to shoot, side by side, the rifles of WWI - shameful! We soon fixed that :)

A buddy of mine had an interest in artillery pieces and wrote in and explained what he wanted to know - some time passed but he was invited along and allowed to get "hands on".

I can only imagine, as Toddy says, the chance of an informed discussion between educated enthusiasts probably is nice for the museum staff from time to time.

Hope you get an opportunity to handle one dwardo - and maybe make one!

Thanks Toddy, Red, i will give it a blast after the holidays when i am back up that way. Red, i may be able to make one but i dotn think my tillering rig would hold up to 100lbs, never mind being able to pull the thing but it would be a nice project as i have yet to make a proper war bow. ;)

We were there yesterday, there is an replica you can pick up. also they have 3 bows, all Bickerstaff's(i think) which you can try the pull on. The "mans bow"(no girlies need apply)one of the staff told me is 75lb, i pulled it back, but was about 3 inch short of a full pull.

The docks are expensive to visit, but a realy good day out, get there early & spend the whole day there. Every Englishman should visit the Victory at least once, & every Frenchman must surely be humbled by her mere existance.
