Hello everyone, and thank you for confirming my registration :0)

I’m Jez, I’m late 40s and I live in Hampshire.

I’ve joined because my interest in Bushcraft has been increasing of late!
My Dad was a Defence diver and Bomb disposal specialist in the Navy so did lots of survival training including escape and evasion, infiltration etc and taught us bits and pieces see we grew up. It also meant we were brought up in a very outdoorsy culture and as a consequence I’ve always done lots of outdoor activities - especially camping, hiking, orienteering, kayaking, surfing cooking over fire, growing our own food (not yet self sufficient but getting there for fruit and veg). I’ve done quite a lot of woodworking using traditional hand tools (including making my own greenhouse and various bits of furniture from scratch). The only change really as I’ve got older is I’ve bought more (and to my wife’s dismay more expensive!) kit to do it with :0)

I’m particularly interested in kit (obviously!), knife and axe skills, shelter making, fire making, foraging and preparing food, general survival skills, carving and woodcraft - I guess pretty much everything Bushcraft!
Have only just discovered the forum and loving it from what I’ve read so far! Have ordered a second hand copy of Northern Bushcraft by Mors Kochanski based upon some of the reviews on here. Grateful for any other pointers to good books or sources of info, particularly good YouTube channels or podcasts. I’ve been watching the hilarious ‘Dutch Bushcraft Knives’ channel recently but find it hard to navigate the many many other Bushcraft channels around.
Thanks again for having me and I look forward to being a member of the community.

Jez

Thanks for the welcome everyone!
First question is a bit meta - I was going to ask for a recommendation on a companion / smaller knife to take with me but not sure which section that should go in? Can someone direct me please and I’ll post it in the appropriate place.

The question I’d like to ask is:

For context: I have various bits of kit that I’ve accumulated over the years across camping, kayaking, gardening etc.. In terms of blades/ cutting tools my main pieces are:

- Fällkniven F1 Pro in Elmax (new toy!)

- Higonokami (in Aogami steel) - it’s my EDC / pocket knife / gardening companion for deadheading and small tasks / box opening / fidget tool

- Gransfors Bruk Outdoor axe - mostly used for making kindling at home for which it’s a very expensive overkill indulgence I know! But it’s light and can be used to split or chop enough to make a fire even out and about, although obviously not up to the tasks of the small forder axe.

- Fiskars Norden N12 splitting axe - used for splitting logs for the fireplace and fire pit at home. It’s real heavy so wouldn’t take away with me unless I’m going to be staying in one spot.

- Silky Gomtaro Pro-Sentai 240 saw - part of my gardening kit for managing my fruit trees. It doesn’t fold like the Bushcraft-specific saws they make, but it is really light, has a sheath and is sharp as anything, has dual size teeth to tackle limbs of various sizes and I’ve cut through serious wood with it.

The question:
I love my Higonokami - and I love good carbon steel for being able to easily sharpen it to get razor sharp - but it corrodes like anything so I constantly have to put Camelia oil on it (pretty much every day I use it if it gets damp at all). So I’m thinking of restricting my Higo for home use and getting another blade to take with me when camping. Any suggestions on a companion / small knife for tasks the F1 isn’t suited to ( because of its blade geometry / style / size)?

Grateful for all advice and opinions received!
(in case it influences advice, I have the Fällkniven DC4 dual stone and the Gransfors Bruk axe stone for sharpening in the field).

Thanks,

Jez
