I made this a new thread from "2 Hammocks", since the subject is different:

your camera diddn't just pic up conisension did it? - a spell in the airing cupboard may be worth a go!;)

Unfortunately not.
I disassembled it and here is the culprit:
See the black cog in the middle
Work&

It has a tiny ridge circumferential to the axis. this ridge rests against the likewise ridge of the motors cover, fixating everything

and this little bugger shows premature wear, causing the cog to float axially and then the lens wont expand

Ofcourse, Sony wont supply the customer with any spare parts form inside a camera, since they dont want anyone to poke inside.
But I will be b******d if I am spending at least € 100,- for a repair which wasnt necessary in the first place, if those blokes at Sony hadnt thought up such crap.

I might try this or get the help from a watchmaker. Problem is, its only a very tiny amount of material abraded, so rebuilding wont be easy.
I also sent a mail to the head of the customer servicer from Sony and wait til I get any answer.

Sadly this is not uncommon. Companies no longer design things to work for very long. They expect people to be "upgrading" in fairly short order and so don't go to the effort of design and building quality items. This explains why so many goods we buy are broken straight out of the box. Of the top of my head I can list a number of items that have cost me a lot of money but which I have had to replace either immediately or within a year; my digital SLR (dud straight from the box), the monitor I'm looking at this on (within 6 months), my last mobile phone (within a month) and the list goes on...

We need to stop consuming and start conserving.
