Speaking of "add ons" the strap round the top of the ALICE is for adding on anything using ALICE clips or the even older wire hangers. The downside is that neither of those are as tight a fit as the MOLLE stuff.

only drawback i can see is zips rather than buckles- i can see zips breaking/jamming on me or freezing in cold weather....
the idea of attaching extra pockets sounds very good, though- which means i could turn it into a summertime overnight bag as well...
DUMB question: can PLCE pouches be attached onto a molle system or vice versa?! i know what both abbreviations stand for but have- apart from an older-version PLCE canteen pouch (holding my NATO standard canteen +OZtralian cup; bought in christchurch before the earthquake flattened the shop...) no experience with either systems...
